After only eight games last week, the 2026 college football season has a full slate for Week 1, including the #10 Oklahoma Sooners hosting the UTEP Miners on Friday night in Norman, Okla.

OU enters as massive 41.5-point favorites on the spread, returning a 1.01x payout if they win outright. The OU vs. UTEP kickoff on Friday night is at 8:00 p.m. ET, televised on SEC Network.

The 10th-ranked Sooners are opening at home for the 14th consecutive season (12-1 in those games), including a 56-7 win over UTEP in 2017.

UTEP vs. #10 Oklahoma Prediction, Spread, Over/Under for NCAAF Week 1

Oklahoma comes into the 2026 season off last year’s College Football Playoff berth, where they lost to SEC foe Alabama in the first round after a second-half disaster, 34-24.

Coach Brent Venables’ squad finished sixth in the nation in total defense last year, leading to the second 10-win season in the last three years.

The issue was offense, which was 92nd in total offense and 79th in scoring. QB John Mateer exploded onto the scene and into Heisman contention early on, until a hand injury derailed his season. He’s back this year, as is leading WR Isaiah Sategna, who led the team with 67 receptions last year.

On the defensive front, the Sooners return many pieces from a side that was third in the nation against the run last year (77.3 yards allowed per game), and top-five in sacks and tackles for losses. Oklahoma DE Taylor Wein (7 sacks in 2025) is also back, as are LBs Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke, who were the top two in tackles for OU. 

With conference realignment always in motion, UTEP moved from Conference USA to the Mountain West Conference ahead of 2026. The Miners are coming off a 2-10 season and are 5-19 in two seasons under Scotty Walden. 

UTEP lost 15 players to the transfer portal and will mostly be starting over on offense. That may not be a bad thing, considering they were 99th in scoring (23.3 points per game) and 114th in total offense last season.

Transfer QB EJ Colson, who played at Incarnate Word (2,142 yards, 16 pass TDs) after beginning his college career at UCF, takes over as the starter. He will have Carver Cheeks at WR after Cheeks transferred from Northern Colorado, where he caught 71 passes for 929 yards last year.
