UNLV vs. Hawaii Prediction, Spread, Over/Under for Week 1 – Saturday, September 5

UNLV had to be happy with much of what it saw from Oklahoma transfer QB Jackson Arnold, but more will be expected. 

The biggest thing the Rebels got was a mistake-free outing against one of the better defenses in the Group of 6. Last season with Auburn, Pro Football Focus had him down for at least 1 turnover-worthy pass in seven of his eight starts. That number was 0 against Memphis despite facing 22 pressures on 48 dropbacks. Those pressures resulted in 7 sacks, which wasn’t all on his offensive line. 

Arnold took multiple sacks due to holding onto the ball too long, but his ability to do just that is an improvement given his ball security issues at Auburn and Oklahoma. Doing it against a strong Memphis pass rush is even more telling.

Dan Mullen has built a strong offense around his new QB, and Arnold looked good when he was given time, but he'll aim to turn some of those empty red zone visits into points. That will take some time given that his offense ranks 90th in TARP and is still gelling. 

That said, he’s got a QB who can take off and two backs he can rely on to keep the chains moving. RB Jaylon Glover is a load to bring down, as he showed with his 44-yd run against Memphis. Jai’Den Thomas is the workhorse of the backfield, and the four-year UNLV man posted a 92.9 PFF run grade last season.

Hawaii’s offense was abysmal for three quarters against Stanford, which isn’t shocking considering the Warriors are returning just 55% of their offensive snaps from a season ago. But once they got going in the fourth quarter, they made a game of it.

QB Micah Alejado saw the hopes slip away though, as the ball escaped from his hands with just over a minute remaining. It led to a 31-yard scoop-and-score that sealed the loss.

The Rainbow Warriors will expect better from their experienced QB, but he needs help from his backfield. Hawaii ranked in the 18th percentile in explosive run rate last season and 18th in rush EPA/play. 

Those deficiencies were on display against Stanford, and coach Timmy Chang may want to get the ground game going against a UNLV defense that ranked 125th in EPA/rush a season ago, per Game On Paper. 

The Hawaii defense is the biggest question mark. Stanford exploited it for long stretches, picking up better than 9.0 yards a pass attempt. The Rainbow Warriors rank 118th in returning defensive production per Bill Connelly, and they must quickly figure things out if they want to avoid an 0-2 start.

It’s always important to check the weather when looking at college football totals, and this game in particular is one where the conditions very well could have an impact on how the game plays out.

The Hawaiian Islands are facing a threat from Hurricane Lowell, which is expected to pass west of the state on Sunday and Monday. The approaching storm has led to advance winds, which are forecasted for tonight to consistently be around 15 mph, with gusts topping 30 mph at times. 

As a result, both teams may be forced to rely on their ground games more than they typically would. That might be problematic for a Hawaii offense that generated nothing on the ground last week.

The Warriors managed just 1.1 second-level yards per attempt and 1.0 open-field yards per rush, a key reason why they managed just 1 explosive run on 20 attempts against Stanford.  

Mullen takes over a UNLV offense that ranked in the 99th percentile in explosive run rate a season ago and the 94th percentile in rush EPA/play, according to Game On Paper. 

Those were two realms in which Hawaii struggled mightily on defense. The Warriors ranked in the 22nd percentile and 33rd percentile, respectively, in those areas, which was a key reason why they ranked 103rd in early-down EPA/play.

Hawaii’s offense is built heavily around timing throws, and winds like we’ll have tonight are a massive disruption to that kind of attack. Of their 491 passes they attempted last season, 329 of them were thrown less than 10 yards downfield.

The Rainbow Warriors thrived on limiting havoc, ranking in the 93rd percentile, but if the passing game isn’t clicking, it will invite the Rebels to bring more pressure on third-and-long situations.

UNLV’s offense is better suited for a game driven either by having and maintaining a lead or by poor weather conditions. Should Hawaii struggle again to move the ball on the ground, that advantage becomes even more pronounced and could lead to a lopsided result.
