The UCLA Bruins vs. California Golden Bears game is set to kick off at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 5 at California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. The Bruins enter as 2.5-point road favorites, via PrizePicks.

These former Pac-12 rivals meet for the first time since 2023, as no one expected these teams would eventually land in the Big Ten and ACC.

The Bruins closed 2025 on a five-game skid and brought in James Madison head coach Bob Chesney to turn things around. UCLA hopes Chesney can make the same impact as another former JMU coach, Curt Cignetti, who won a National Championship at Indiana in his second season.

The Golden Bears qualified for a bowl game after November upsets of Louisville and SMU. Cal finished with its first winning record since 2019 despite falling to Hawaii in the final seconds of the Hawaii Bowl.

Below, we'll break down our UCLA vs. California prediction and picks for Saturday's college football game, including the winner, spread, over/under, and key player picks for PrizePicks.

UCLA vs. California Prediction, Spread, Over/Under for Week 1 – Saturday, September 5

The Bruins went through a roller coaster ride during their dreadful 3-9 campaign last season. UCLA started 0-4, punctuated by a pair of 25+ point home blowouts at the hands of Utah and New Mexico.

However, UCLA surprised Penn State as 24.5-point home underdogs in a 42-37 shocker, starting a three-game winning streak. Following a 3-point home victory over Maryland two weeks after the Penn State upset, the Bruins never saw the win column again in 2025.

California wasn’t expected to be a huge factor in football following its move from the Pac-12 to the ACC in 2024. However, the Golden Bears improved from 2-6 in conference play in 2024 to 4-4 last season.

Cal was responsible for pulling off two of the biggest upsets in ACC action, knocking off Louisville as 18.5-point underdogs and stunning SMU as 13.5-point underdogs. But the Bears also lost by double digits at home to Duke and Virginia while also barely beating North Carolina as 7.5-point favorites.

Chesney looks to get UCLA’s offense on track after guiding James Madison to the 19th-highest adjusted EPA per play, per Game on Paper. The Bruins were further down in that category last season, ranking 68th nationally and 14th among Big Ten schools.
