Last week was a disaster across the board for James Madison. The Dukes lost their first game of the season, likely ending their dream of making the College Football Playoff for the second consecutive season. According to PrizePicks, JMU now has an 11.11x payout to make the CFP.

There’s still an outside chance if the Dukes win out, paired with other top-tier Group of Six schools losing, such as Boise State, New Mexico, and Oregon State. However, winning out becomes more difficult with RB George Pettaway out due to an injury tonight.

Pettaway has 824 rushing yards (103.0 per game), ranking 14th across college football. James Madison tends to lean on the run with a 54.12% rush play rate (62nd percentile) and 5.1 yards per carry (86th percentile).

The Dukes will likely feature a by-committee approach, with work split between RB Nick Herman (301 yards) and RB Seth Cromwell (179 yards). Plus, QB Camden Coleman has 42 rushing attempts on the season. Last week, Cromwell took 4 carries compared to Herman’s 2.

JMU remains the top dog of the Sun Belt, featuring a 1.85x payout to win the conference championship, per PrizePicks. Its 4-1 conference record sits first, while Troy is 1-2 in the Sun Belt.

The Trojans have especially struggled to score of late, with 10.0 PPG over the last two weeks. That likely won’t cut it against a James Madison squad tallying 34.9 PPG (87th percentile). According to Game on Paper, Troy has -0.17 adjusted EPA per play (19th percentile), which is far behind JMU’s +0.01 (51st percentile).

At a notable efficiency disadvantage, the Trojans will likely need improved play across the board to keep this one close. Can Troy keep Week 9’s Thursday night contest competitive?

Troy vs. James Madison Prediction on Spread – 10/29/26

James Madison has the luxury of running behind a solid offensive line, allowing just a 14.0% stuff rate (86th percentile) in the run game, per Fourth and Short. Plus, the Dukes generate 3.3 line yards per carry (78th percentile) — which measures an offensive line’s ability to produce push.

With that said, JMU’s identity to run the rock likely won’t change, even with Pettaway out. Troy, meanwhile, allows a 42.1% rush success rate (42nd percentile).

Furthermore, the Trojans concede a 1.57 pass explosiveness rating (37th percentile), and James Madison has the ability to hit big plays through the air thanks to a 1.63 explosiveness rating (70th percentile). Success on the ground, paired with successful shots downfield does not pair well for Troy.

On the flip side, the Trojans also need their run game to travel, sporting a 57.31% rush play rate (82nd percentile). However, the Dukes surrender only 3.4 yards per carry (84th percentile) and a 34.6% rush success rate (87th percentile).

Troy’s best shot to keep this close could come down to holding JMU’s offense to field goals. The Trojans give up a low 72.73% red zone scoring rate (91st percentile), but the Dukes are also sound in the red zone with a 97.06% scoring rate (97th percentile).

James Madison is 6-2 against the spread (ATS), trumping Troy’s 2-5 record. A low-scoring game would favor the Trojans, but that’s easier said than done with the Dukes recording 39.6 PPG in their last five.
