It’s a new era for Oklahoma State, whose embarrassing results in 2024 (3-9) and the start of 2025 (1-2) inspired change from longtime head coach Mike Gundy and even led to an 0-9 stretch to close last season. The school pried new HC Eric Morris away from North Texas, which appears to have been an awesome call.
With RB Caleb Hawkins entrenched as a star in the backfield, Morris brought QB Drew Mestemaker along with him from UNT, and the results have been magnificent for the most part. This is a crew that lost a ton of offensive production and didn’t return a whole lot on defense; the roster came into the year with 65 transfers — including 20 from the Mean Green.
OSU provided plenty of reason for fans to bring about doom and gloom after being blown out 24-10 by Tulsa to open this season. Since then, however, it’s been smooth sailing for the Cowboys. They’ve won four straight contests, including a 39-31 triumph over #6 Oregon and a recent 14-point outcome vs. UCF last Saturday.
On the opposite sideline, Houston just keeps chugging along with HC Willie Fritz at the helm. He went 4-8 in his debut with the team but improved to 10-3 last year, then retained QB Conner Weigman and swapped out RB Dean Connors for Makhi Hughes while keeping Re’Shaun Sanford II. Elsewhere at the skill positions, standout WR Amare Thomas is back in the fold, joined by newcomer TE Patrick Overmyer (UTSA).
Defensively, Austin Armstrong’s unit added pieces like DB Javion White (Tulane) and DL Ashton Porter (Oregon) to the mix and now sits 37th out of 138 programs in scoring on that end (19.2 PPG).
The Cougars’ lone defeat this campaign came at the hands of #13 Texas Tech in a narrow 28-26 final score. In three ensuing bouts, U of H is up by a combined 43 points in games vs. Georgia Southern, UCF, and Kansas State.
The aforementioned loss to TTU has Houston sitting closer to the middle of the Big 12 standings right behind Arizona, but this is a chance to rise up the ranks. OSU, meanwhile, is one of five undefeated programs in conference play and joins #8 BYU, #10 Texas Tech, #11 Utah, and unranked Baylor.
These two sides last faced off against one another just over a year ago on Oct. 11, 2025. In that bout in Stillwater, it was Houston that emerged with a 39-17 road win and a cover as 14.5-point favorites. Dating back 20 years, the over has hit in all five meetings in the series.
As far as injuries are concerned, Houston is down starting DL De’Marion Thomas (12 tackles) due to an undisclosed ailment. In the secondary, DB Alvin Williamson Jr. is doubtful and CB Jalen Mayo is questionable.
