Norway vs. France Lineups Analysis: Norway Resting Starters, Saliba Out

The biggest lineup note by a mile is Norway’s election to rest 10 of 11 starters in this match. With a win, the Vikings would have secured a Group I victory with a more favorable Round of 32 matchup.

Norway was already in the underdog role before the shocking decision to rest stars like Erling Haaland. Following Matchday 2’s 3-2 win over Senegal to secure a place in the knockout stage, Haaland did say they’d probably lose to France.

Perhaps Norway is simply recognizing France’s superior talent and does not think it’s worth risking their starters. Still, it’s a shocking decision with Group I on the line. Plus, it’s a letdown for fans, as we were slated to see Haaland line up against a star-studded France squad.

For France, they made four changes to the starting lineup. Left-back Lucas Digne and center-back William Saliba have been replaced by Théo Hernández and Maxence Lacroix.

Saliba remains France’s best defender and will be a major piece going forward as he looks to fully recover from a back issue

Aurélien Tchouaméni replaces Adrien Rabiot in the midfield, and Désiré Doué is back in the starting lineup over Bradley Barcola at left wing.

In Matchday 2’s 3-0 win over Iraq, Barcola filled in as left winger over Doué. France manager Didier Deschamps likely made the move due to Barcola’s goal in only 10 minutes vs. Senegal. But after Barcola took only 1 shot in 83 minutes vs. Iraq, Doué has his shot to claim the job going into the knockout stage.
