Considering NC State’s (1-2) and Stanford’s (1-3) slow starts in ACC play, either squad would be happy to reach bowl eligibility.
According to PrizePicks, the Wolfpack have a 1.35x payout to reach 6+ wins and 2.12x for 7+ wins. Stanford, meanwhile, has a 1.69x payout to tally 4+ wins, far behind 3.03x for 5+ wins.
At 3-4, the Cardinal may have already maxed out in the win column. If they are to approach a .500 record and a bowl appearance, tonight is a must-win, with three consecutive road games ahead vs. Louisville, Virginia Tech, and California. Stanford caps the regular season vs. one of the ACC’s best, #23 SMU.
NC State could have its toughest games in the rearview mirror. The Wolfpack managed to defeat Louisville as 5.5-point underdogs on October 3 but followed that with a 38-14 loss as 4.5-point underdogs vs. Wake Forest.
Both teams are battling a slew of injuries for Friday night’s bout.
The ACC injury report lists NC State RB Jayden Scott, S Tristan Teasdell, WR Jojo Trader, and OG Kamen Smith as out.
Scott leads the team with 358 rushing yards, and Trader had 221 receiving yards over five games, including 92 yards in his last appearance vs. Louisville. Smith, a starting guard, will also miss his second consecutive contest tonight.
For a team coming off bye, the Wolfpack still feature a beat-up offense, and this is a unit that’s stumbled with 25.0 PPG (46th percentile) and 5.0 yards per play (25th percentile).
Fortunately, NC State is facing one of the worst defenses across college football, with Stanford yielding 41.5 PPG (second percentile) and 6.7 yards per play (seventh percentile). Further, the Cardinal will be without a couple of key defenders: LB Matt Rose and CB Brandon Nicholson.
Stanford RB Micah Ford, who tops the team with 529 rushing yards, was also a late add to the injury report and is now questionable for tonight.
As each ACC squad chases three more wins to become bowl eligible, who could snag their fourth win of the season tonight?
NC State vs. Stanford Prediction on Spread – 10/23/26
Since NC State RB Jayden Scott left the Louisville game with an injury, backup RB Davion Gause produced 28 carries for 80 rushing yards over two contests, good for only 2.9 yards per carry.
Inefficiencies on the ground is nothing new, with the Wolfpack tallying only 3.3 yards per carry (ninth percentile). That’s led to a high 51.37% pass play rate (72nd percentile), leaning on the arm of QB CJ Bailey — who is projected 267.5 pass yards on PrizePicks tonight.
Bailey’s taken on an even more prominent role since Scott suffered the injury, tallying season-highs of 40 and 39 passing attempts in his last two. Led by Bailey’s 284.6 passing yards per game in his last five, expect NC State to keep airing it out.
That’s a problem for Stanford, which yields 8.2 yards per passing attempt (19th percentile) and a 50.5% pass success rate (12th percentile), per Game on Paper. Opponents rack up 289.3 passing yards per game (fifth percentile) vs. the Cardinal.
Stanford has poor efficiency across the board, seen by 2.9 yards per carry (fourth percentile) and 6.8 yards per passing attempt (34th percentile). The Cardinal have a 55.24% pass play rate (89th percentile), but Stanford likely wants more balance with constant negative game scripts leading to a boatload of passing attempts.
According to Fourth and Short, NC State touts an impressive 20.0% havoc rate on defense (90th percentile). If Stanford’s lead ball carrier Micah Ford is out, plenty of dropbacks could be a problem against this defensive front.
Meanwhile, Bailey may shred the Cardinal secondary, and Stanford doesn’t generate much pressure with just a 14.4% havoc rate (27th percentile). When Bailey is in a clean pocket, he sports a 77.2% adjusted completion percentage, via Pro Football Focus.
Stanford’s -0.21 adjusted EPA per play is 122nd out of 138 FBS schools, and that total is last among Power Four schools. The Cardinal’s -25.8 average scoring margin on the season (135th nationally) only draws more concern.
Until this team shows a heartbeat, Stanford yields almost no confidence. The Cardinal are 2-5 against the spread (ATS), including 1-5 over the last six.
