Entering the 2026-27 season, there’s plenty of unknowns about the defending national champions.
Michigan saw F Yaxel Lendeborg, F Morez Johnson Jr., and C Aday Mara all depart and be drafted within the first 12 picks of the 2026 NBA Draft. Plus, head coach Dusty May took the Dallas Mavericks’ head coach job, leading to Michigan assistant Mike Boynton’s promotion to head coach.
Boynton was head man for Oklahoma State from 2017-18 to 2023-24, leading some memorable seasons like the 2020-21 campaign led by G Cade Cunningham — who now stars for the Pistons. Boynton never led the Cowboys past the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament over seven seasons, leading to real concerns around this hire.
Fortunately, Boynton gets to lean on returning key players in the backcourt: G Elliot Cadeau, G Trey McKenney, and G Roddy Gayle Jr. The Wolverines also eased their frontcourt losses by landing C Moustapha Thiam (#13 transfer) and F J.P. Estrella (#23 transfer) in the transfer portal, per 247 Sports.
After missing the season opener due to illness, Thiam is expected to make his Michigan debut on Friday night.
However, the backcourt depth took a huge hit after true freshman five-star G Brandon McCoy Jr. suffered a season-ending torn ACL during an exhibition game. That depth will be tested against a Huskies team full of talented wings.
Head coach Dan Hurley and UConn had two big transfer portal wins in Seton Hall transfer C Najai Hines (#29 transfer) and Duke transfer F Nikolas Khamenia (#36 transfer). Plus, the Huskies return G Silas Demary Jr., G Braylon Mullins, and F Jayden Ross from last season’s rotation. They will also lean on true freshmen F Colben Landrew (#26 recruit) and G Junior County (#47 recruit).
Mullins (#8), Landrew (#26), Khamenia (#50), and McKenney (#39) are wings with NBA potential, appearing in Jeremy Woo’s top 100 prospects for his 2027 NBA Draft Big Board, via ESPN.
With each roster laid out, let’s dig into our Michigan vs. UConn prediction for Friday night.

Michigan vs. UConn Prediction on Over/Under for Hall of Fame Series – 11/6/26
To open the 2026-27 season, both teams began with an under. It wasn’t from a lack of offense, with Michigan posting 84 points compared to UConn’s 86. The Wolverines held Oakland to 31.7% shooting, while UConn limited Gardner-Webb to 25.5%.
Neither team shot well on 3-pointers either; Michigan was 7 of 34 (20.6%), and UConn cashed in 9 of 29 looks (31.0%). Frankly, I don’t expect either squad to be shy about letting it fly.
In the 2025-26 season, the Wolverines had a 41.4% 3-point rate (61st percentile), slightly ahead of Connecticut’s 40.9% (59th percentile), via TeamRankings. Considering each team’s best returning scorers are guards who love to shoot 3-balls, this could increase in 2026-27.
We saw just that on Monday, as Michigan launched 34 3-point attempts compared to last season’s 25.0 per game. UConn, meanwhile, hoisted 29 in its first 2026-27 contest, surpassing 24.1 attempted triples per contest from 2025-26. The 3-point battle will likely have the biggest factor in pushing this toward a high total.
However, pace is something that may thwart a high-scoring affair. In last season’s national championship game, UConn was in the 89th percentile for the slowest adjusted tempos, per Bart Torvik. That slowed Michigan’s pace (94th percentile for the quickest adjusted tempo), leading to a 132 combined total and under for last season’s clash.
Both teams feature mostly the same backcourt from that national championship game, further pointing to another slow pace controlled by the Huskies’ and Hurley’s style of play.
According to EvanMiya, Michigan G Elliot Cadeau (3.28) and G Trey McKenney (2.44) had above-average Defensive Bayesian Performance Ratings (DBPR) last season. UConn G Silas Demary Jr. (3.60) is among the best backcourt defenders in the nation, and G Braylon Mullins (2.48) and F Jayden Ross (2.54) were above-average in DBPR last season.
In short, open 3-point looks may not come easy against these defenses. Opponents shot 30.4% from deep vs. Michigan last season (95th percentile), and UConn was even better at 30.2% allowed (98th percentile).
If the triples are not falling, paired with a potential slow pace, Michigan vs. UConn could be another slugfest similar to last season’s national championship battle.

Michigan vs. UConn Picks, Player Stats for PrizePicks: 11/6/26
Here are the top Michigan vs. UConn picks to target on Friday, November 6. Today’s college basketball picks for PrizePicks include Elliot Cadeau and Braylon Mullins.
Michigan G Elliot Cadeau vs. UConn: 6.5 Assists
- Elliot Cadeau finished last season with the offense’s second-highest usage rate (22.9%). His 33.7% assist rate was fifth in the Big Ten among eligible players. With that said, expect Cadeau to remain this team’s floor general.
- But after totaling 5.9 assists per game (APG) last season, this projection feels high. That’s further supported by his 6 assists in 34 minutes vs. Oakland on Monday.
- While it’s a small sample size of one game, Cadeau’s usage rate was only 19.7% vs. Oakland, while G Trey McKenney (20.8%) and G Roddy Gayle Jr. (21.3%) each handled the ball with usage rates surpassing 20.0%.
- UConn finished three of the past four seasons in the top 12 of Bart Torvik’s adjusted defensive efficiency. Michigan could struggle to get quality shots, harming Cadeau’s chance for finding open shooters.

UConn G Braylon Mullins vs. Michigan: 16.5 Points
- We’ve focused on perimeter defense, but Braylon Mullins may launch attempts like Pop-A-Shot anyway. In last season’s national championship, he tallied 17 field goal attempts and 10 looks from 3-point land.
- That volume continued into the season-opening game vs. Gardner-Webb, featuring 12 shots, 4-of-9 shooting on triples, and 20 points.
- Despite shooting only 33.5% on 3-pointers, Mullins racked up 6.5 3-point attempts per game in 2025-26. His mechanics look sound, and his high draft stock and five-star status as a 2025 recruit are led by his shooting upside. Frankly, I expect positive regression for Mullins’ 3-point shot this season.
- Additionally, Michigan C Moustapha Thiam was regarded as one of the best interior defenders in the portal, proven by a 3.16 DBPR at Cincinnati. That further encourages Mullins to lean on 3-point shots.
