Mexico vs. England Lineup Analysis: Quansah Moves Into Starting XI, Mexico Keeps Status Quo
England is making a change at RB with Jarell Quansah drawing into the starting XI in place of Djed Spence. Spence got the start in the Round of 32 against DR Congo but struggled defensively throughout the match.
Quansah started at RB in place of Reece James against Panama during qualifying but was forced to leave the match due to injury. In addition, Spence was deemed unfit to start vs. Mexico due to injury, opening the door for Quansah.
As a result of inconsistent play at the right-back position, Mexico LW Julián Quiñones could look to exploit the matchup and be quite aggressive throughout the Round of 16 battle. Quiñones has scored 3 goals in 4 matches at the 2026 World Cup, pacing El Tri.
England LW Anthony Gordon will also join the starting XI against Mexico. Gordon supplied assists on each of ST Harry Kane’s 2 goals in the Round of 32 against DR Congo.
Meanwhile, Mexico will start the same group as it did against Ecuador, with Quiñones, Raúl Jiménez, and Roberto Alvarado composing a talented forward group.
Goals could be at a premium in Sunday’s match, with only Argentina and Spain surrendering fewer expected goals (xG) than England and Mexico. El Tri has conceded just 0.56 xG per match, while the Three Lions have given up 0.58 xG up to this point.
