With that said, the Mercury front office did make headlines over the weekend when news broke that the franchise was acquiring All-Star G Kelsey Plum from the Los Angeles Sparks. While Plum is on an expiring contract and is reportedly planning to test free agency, there seems to be some optimism that she could re-up with Phoenix on a long-term contract. 

Coming off a horrendous 10-34 campaign last year, the Sky and head coach Tyler Marsh are flashing some improvement in 2026. It’s still been tough sledding, evidenced by an 11-18 record, but Chicago is 7-6 since dropping six straight to begin the year 4-12.

Losing star F Rickea Jackson to a torn ACL essentially doomed the Sky’s season. Three players (G Sydney Taylor, C Kamilla Cardoso, and G Skylar Diggins) are putting up 14+ PPG, yet efficiency remains an issue. The Sky rank 11th out of 15 teams in points per shot at 1.078.

These clubs have already met twice this season, with this being the third and final clash of 2026. Phoenix captured an 8-point victory back on May 15, but it was Chicago that won 77-66 on July 7.
