In just their second season, the expansion club Valkyries improved their win rate from .523 in 2025 to a staggering .727 in 2026. Head coach Natalie Nakase’s crew fared well enough to secure the second overall seed in the playoffs.

It was somewhat smooth sailing from there, as Golden State clipped the Dallas Wings to kick off its WNBA Playoff slate and followed it up with a three-game sweep of the Las Vegas Aces.

When the Valks went up 1-0 on Atlanta in the WNBA Finals, many believed the team of destiny was set to flourish behind the big three of F Gabby Williams, F Janelle Salaun, and G Veronica Burton.

On the opposite sideline, life’s been a dream for Atlanta. In year two under head coach Karl Smesko, the club matched its regular-season record of 30-14 and had a three-headed monster of G Allisha Gray (19.0 PPG), G Rhyne Howard (17.7 PPG), and F Angel Reese (16.4 PPG) doing plenty of heavy lifting.

The Dream closed the regular season on a five-game winning streak (including four after the FIBA World Cup break) and have lost just one of eight postseason games. That WNBA Finals Game 1 defeat at the hands of the Valkyries was a tightly-contested battle that saw both teams shoot 21% or worse from 3-point land and struggle to a combined 132 points.

The story of Game 2 was a bit different. The Dream’s offense recovered and throttled Golden State in the second half, outscoring the competition by a margin of 12 points. Getting to the free throw line proved critical for Atlanta, which drained 30 of 35 attempts at the charity stripe.

Wednesday’s pivotal Game 3 wasn’t even close. Fueled by 21 points and 12 rebounds by Reese and double-digit scoring efforts from four others, the Dream hung 97 points on the Valkyries and completely dominated the paint battle with 44 points to Golden State’s 20.

Nakase’s group had one of the W’s top defenses during the regular season, but it was nowhere to be found, thus setting the stage for what should be a brilliant Game 4 on Saturday.
