Lions vs. Panthers Prediction, Spread, Over/Under for Sunday Night Football
The Lions qualified for the NFL playoffs in two consecutive seasons under head coach Dan Campbell and even reached the NFC Championship in 2023. However, Detroit missed the postseason in 2025 after going 9-8 and finishing last in the NFC North.
To start off the 2026 campaign, the Lions survived a late-game scare and outlasted the New Orleans Saints in a 31-30 overtime win in Week 1. After dropping a 41-31 decision to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2, Detroit bounced back with a 31-24 win against New York in a game where the Lions racked up 381 yards of total offense.
Detroit’s offense has a stellar aerial attack, averaging 368.3 passing yards per game (ninth). Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown remains the team’s top pass-catcher, ranking fourth in the NFL in receptions (23) and second in TDs (5).
Defensively, the Lions are surrendering 31.7 points per game, the worst in the NFL. According to RBSDM, the Detroit defense has posted 0.183 EPA per play allowed (31st).
Meanwhile, after missing the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, the Panthers returned to the postseason in 2025. The NFC South was certainly a lackluster division a season ago, as Carolina was postseason-bound with an 8-9 record.
The Panthers’ lone win came in Week 2 against the Falcons in a dominant 34-3 triumph. Carolina is coming off an underwhelming Week 3, losing 21-18 to the Browns. In that contest, the Panthers outgained Cleveland 360-259 in total yardage, led by QB Bryce Young, who completed 26 of 48 passes for 291 yards and a TD.
WR Tetairoa McMillan led the Panthers in receptions (70), receiving yards (1,014), and TDs (7) in 2025 but has actually been outgained by teammate Jalen Coker thus far. Coker leads Carolina with 18 catches for 222 yards and 2 TDs through three games.
On defense, the Panthers have held opponents in check through the air. Carolina is allowing just 172.3 passing yards per game, which ranks fifth in the league.
Lions S Brian Branch has yet to play in 2026 as he recovers from a torn Achilles tendon but is “close” to returning to practice. CB D.J. Reed is dealing with a rib injury and is questionable for Sunday’s game. The team is also without CB Avonte Maddox in its secondary, as the veteran defensive back was placed on injured reserve last month due to a foot injury.
Carolina will be without WR Xavier Legette, who was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. The Panthers’ secondary takes a big hit, with CB Jaycee Horn (quadriceps) and CB Mike Jackson (groin) being placed on injured reserve this past week. Additionally, Coker (quadriceps) is listed as questionable for Sunday’s contest.
