Jimmy Butler Injury Update: Butler Out for the Year?

At the 7:41 mark of the third quarter of Monday’s 135-112 win, Butler attempted to leap to grab a pass in the paint when he collided with Heat G Davion Mitchell. When the two collided, Butler’s right knee appeared to twist when he landed, and he was in immediate pain.

Butler remained down on the court for a few minutes before he was helped to the locker room by his teammates after being unable to put any weight on his right leg. Teammates Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga ended up hoisting Butler’s arms over their shoulders and helping him to a wheelchair in the team tunnel.

Charania also reported that Butler left the Chase Center immediately to get an MRI performed on his right knee. His agent, Bernie Lee, informed Charania that the MRI confirmed their worst fears that Butler had indeed torn his ACL and will undergo surgery.

Prior to injuring his knee, Butler was in the midst of having a very productive evening. In 21 minutes, the star wing had scored 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while recording four assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

In 2025-26, Butler is second on the team in scoring with 20.0 points per game, while also tallying a team-high 1.4 steals per contest.

What Warriors' Players Could Replace Jimmy Butler's Production?

Losing Butler for the remainder of the season is obviously a massive blow to the Warriors on both ends of the floor. As a result, Golden State will likely need to receive increased production from its rotation.

The simplest option to replace Butler is certainly the most complex.

Jonathan Kuminga

Prior to Butler’s injury, F Jonathan Kuminga and the Warriors appeared to be headed for a divorce.

Kuminga had signed a two-year, $48.5 million contract to remain with the Warriors in September and did have a strong start to the 2025-26 season. However, the former first-round pick hasn’t seen the court since Dec. 18 after falling out of the rotation.

Last week, according to ESPN, Kuminga reportedly demanded that the Warriors trade him. Golden State wasn’t permitted to trade Kuminga prior to Jan. 15 due to conditions in his contract, but now that date has passed.

With Butler out of the lineup, the Warriors may see if the relationship is truly fractured. Perhaps Kuminga can emerge as a potential rotation option for Golden State. Prior to being benched, Kuminga averaged 11.8 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 2.6 RPG in 18 games (13 starts).

Moses Moody

While the Kuminga situation is unknown, the Warriors can turn to G Moses Moody to help fill the void left by Butler.

Moody, who was also selected in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft, is enjoying his most productive professional season to date. The Warriors guard has averaged a career-high 10.7 PPG, while shooting a career-best 39.5% from beyond the arc.

Even before Butler went down, Moody was enjoying a stellar stretch. Moody averaged 15.0 PPG and shot 62.0% from three in his last four games, including a 21-point performance vs. the New York Knicks on Jan. 15.

Moody ranks third on the team behind G Stephen Curry and G Brandin Podziemski in three-point shooting percentage. With his minutes expected to increase, Moody could become relied upon even more as a scoring option with Butler out of the lineup.
