Jalen Hurts Injury Update: When Will Hurts Return From Blood Clot?

On Thursday, the Eagles announced that Hurts has a superficial blood clot in his calf and would miss Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

Hurts was originally cleated against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 4 and received calf treatment the week before facing the Jaguars. Before last Sunday’s game, an ultrasound was performed on Hurts’ calf, which revealed a superficial blood clot.

A superficial blood clot, also known as thrombosis, is a blood clot that occurs inside an inflamed vein. Superficial blood clots occur near the skin's surface and are common in people with varicose veins.

Following Hurts’ original diagnosis, team doctors determined that it was safe for the Eagles’ signal-caller to play against the Jaguars. The team recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the team’s return flight to Philadelphia.

On Wednesday night, the follow-up ultrasound showed movement in the small blood clot. Hurts had fully practiced Wednesday before the ultrasound.

According to The Mayo Clinic, potential treatments include applying heat to the affected area and blood-thinning medication.

For now, it's a waiting game, as it's unclear how long Hurts could be out because of the blood clot.

Eagles, Tanner McKee Fantasy Football Outlook With Hurts Out

With Hurts dealing with a blood clot, backup QB Tanner McKee will get the start against the Panthers in Week 6. McKee has appeared in six games (two starts) in his NFL career, completing 61.4% of his passes for 597 yards and 5 TDs with just 1 INT.

McKee last started in the 2025 regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders. The Stanford product completed 21 of 40 passes for 240 yards and 1 TD, while also throwing 1 INT.

The Eagles’ offense hasn’t been the most lethal this season, averaging 170.6 passing yards per game (27th). According to RBSDM, Philadelphia has tallied a -0.0347 dropback EPA (23rd) and a 38.1% dropback success rate (31st).

McKee has thrown for 241+ yards in both of his career starts. In addition to his start last season, the fourth-year QB completed 27 of 41 passes for 269 yards and 2 TDs in the 2024 regular-season finale against the New York Giants.

Unfortunately for McKee, the Eagles are quite shorthanded with the status of RB Saquon Barkley (hamstring), WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring/toe), and WR Dontayvion Wicks (hamstring) up in the air. Smith logged a limited practice on Thursday, but Barkley and Wicks didn’t practice.

Currently, McKee has Week 6 projections of 195.5 passing yards, 18.5 passing completions, and 0.5 passing TDs (Goblin) vs. the Panthers, via PrizePicks. The Eagles are a 3.5-point home underdogs against the Panthers and return a 2.43x payout if they win outright in Week 6 — or a $243 return on a $100 entry if you're right on PrizePicks.
