These two Indiana schools have met seven times in college football, with Purdue holding an undefeated 7-0 all-time record in the series, including a 103-0 combined score over the last two head-to-heads.

Indiana State’s season got off to a rough start in Week 0, when they lost as 2.5-point home favorites to Southeast Missouri State. Following their 3-9 showing last year, the Sycamores certainly did not want to get off to that start in 2026, and it will not get any easier against an FBS foe in Purdue.

Indiana State head coach Curt Mallory is entering his ninth season with the team and has a sliver of hope in the fact that he is entering with perhaps his most talented QB of his entire tenure. 

Indiana State QB Elijah Owens is a 6’2, 225-pound dual-threat QB who missed basically all of 2025 with a collarbone injury. He is back for his redshirt junior year and was voted team captain for the 2026 season, his third consecutive year.

Owens was the lone bright spot for the Sycamores last week, throwing for 288 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT.

Purdue, the massive home favorite on Friday night, is entering 2026 fresh off a disastrous 2-10 season. While their 3.5 projected win total doesn’t inspire much confidence, there are a few reasons to be excited about the Boilermakers this year.

First, Purdue's schedule is slightly less top-heavy. While the Boilermakers still have to face their fair share of Big Ten powerhouses, they won’t have to go through Ohio State, Michigan, or USC — three teams who tattooed them by a combined score of 125-30 last year.

It’s also the second year for offensive coordinator Josh Henson, who has had incredibly explosive offenses in his previous spots at USC, Missouri, Texas A&M, and Tennessee.

He is also entering 2026 with starting QB Ryan Browne, bringing over a year of continuity that can only benefit Browne and this retooled offense, which could certainly bring an explosive element in 2026.
