In Idaho’s season opener against Cal Poly, a 38-34 loss, QB Joshua Wood had a coming-out party by going off for 363 yards and a pair of TDs. Sophomore WR Tony Harste also turned in a great performance with 9 grabs for 180 yards and both scores. Now, the pressure is on the Vandals and star offensive coordinator Ian Shoemaker to follow that up with an inspired outing in SLC.

It’s a new era for Utah as well, as Kyle Whittingham has moved on to Michigan and left Morgan Scalley to step into his shoes. 

Utah boasts plenty of returners from a successful 11-2 club last year, with QB Devon Dampier and RB Wayshawn Parker topping the list. Defensive stalwart LB Johnathan Hall is back, too, setting the tone for a team that doesn’t want to experience any decline. 

One major piece that could help that process is WR Braden Pegan, who comes over from Utah State after recording 60 catches for 925 yards and 5 TDs in 2025. Slot receiver Kyri Shoels (59 receptions, 768 yards, 2 TDs) is also a prime name to watch. 

Thursday’s game is the first meeting since 1993 between these two squads that played annually from 1947 to 1964. Utah owns a 14-12-1 all-time edge over Idaho.
