Week 8 College Football Predictions, Upset Picks – Saturday, October 24
This Saturday's college football slate has plenty of underdogs, but two games stand out as potential college football upset spots on Saturday, October 24. These underdogs have a payout higher than 2x to win outright on PrizePicks as of writing.
Tennessee looks for another upset, this time on the road in Columbia to face the South Carolina Gamecocks at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. Later, #7 Ole Miss looks to send #19 Texas to its third straight loss at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
The payouts listed below indicate real-money earnings if a prediction is correct; for example, a 2x on a $100 entry pays out $200. The lower the payout multiplier, the higher the chance of the outcome occurring, according to user picks.
#11 Tennessee vs. South Carolina: College Football Upset Watch Today
Start Time: 3:30 p.m. ET | TV: ESPN
Tennessee, fresh off its big upset over Alabama last week at home, now takes on a Gamecocks team that had its own upset two weeks ago in Gainesville vs. Florida.
The Volunteers continue to dominate on defense, allowing only 14.0 PPG over their last five games, including a complete shutdown of a hot Alabama offense, holding them to 10 on Saturday.
The Tennessee defense is 10th in the nation and leads the SEC in scoring at 14.7 PPG and is 14th in total defense, allowing 280.4 yards per game.
Tennessee’s defense has been effective against the pass, ranking second nationally in defensive passing EPA/play and first in limiting passing explosiveness, according to Punt and Rally.
Before shocking the Gators, SC had allowed 41.6 PPG over a three-game losing streak. QB LaNorris Sellers has thrown 13 TDs and 4 INTs overall but hasn't gone up against a defense like that of the Volunteers.
Tennessee hasn't had a great passing offense, but its 217.1 rushing YPG are 18th in the nation, which may allow them to control the clock. Add a top defense into the fray, and the wrong team might be favored here.
The Volunteers have already shown they can beat ranked opponents and win close SEC games and are in the mix of the College Football Playoff race.

#7 Ole Miss vs. #19 Texas: College Football Upset Watch Today
Start Time: 7:30 p.m. ET | TV: ABC
Just a few weeks ago, Texas was the #1 team in the country and among the favorites to win the CFP National Championship. Now, after consecutive losses to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry and Florida at home, the Longhorns are trying to avoid a third straight defeat and keep their CFP hopes alive.
They face an Ole Miss team that has rebounded from its own loss to Florida with consecutive wins over Vanderbilt and #11 Missouri by a combined 63 points.
Despite the losses, Texas is still favored, but the Longhorns' inability to sustain drives could be the difference against an Ole Miss team that ranks in the top 20 in scoring. Texas has gone three-and-out on 34.3% of its possessions (highest in the SEC) and converted just 22.2% of its third downs over the last three games.
The Longhorns have averaged only 22.7 PPG in those three SEC games after scoring 37.7 PPG in non-conference action.
The Longhorns are 6-13-1 against the spread in conference tilts since joining three years ago, tied with Auburn for the worst cover rate in the SEC. Ole Miss is 12-9 ATS over this same time. The Longhorns also failed to cover each of their past five games this season after opening with a 59-7 win over Texas State.
Ole Miss has scored 83 points in its last two games since the loss to Florida and has been particularly effective at finishing drives. The Rebels have scored on all 24 red-zone trips, turning 21 of them into TDs.
If Texas continues to struggle on third down and gives QB Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels additional possessions, Ole Miss has the offensive firepower to take advantage and leave Austin with a key SEC road victory, which would be its third over a ranked team.
