Our biggest divergence from consensus, and the numbers back it. Marcel Reed returns as the No. 25 QB by EPA. A 10-2 or 9-3 window in a hard SEC schedule could make said record even more impressive considering the Aggies own a top-25 SOS.

Texas Tech (Big 12 Champion)

Texas Tech CFP qualifier payouts: 1.36x Yes | 2.77x No

The only blemish on Texas Tech's resume is their strength of schedule. They drew the ninth-easiest pass-defense schedule nationally, rank 49th in run-defense schedule (second-easiest in the conference), all inside a 73rd overall SOS.

The Red Raiders own the softest path on both sides of the ball in their own conference. That's precisely why 11+ wins only buys a 7.5 average seed.

Miami (ACC Champion)

Miami CFP qualifier payouts: 1.28x Yes | 3.33x No

Winning the ACC is Miami's best outcome. The Hurricanes are 66th overall in SOS with a genuinely split profile. The 54th pass-defense schedule (sixth in the ACC) gives Duke transfer QB Darian Mensah (20th in QB EPA) room to produce, while the 116th run-defense schedule means Miami may have to earn every yard on the ground.

Memphis (Group of Five)

Memphis AAC Championship Game qualifier payouts: 2.85x Yes | 1.31x No

Memphis' ceiling may be 11 wins on the 87th-ranked schedule. Charles Huff is coming, and a big program builder wins the opener on the road against a good UNLV program that's in contention to win the MWC. The Tigers also have a pivotal game against Boise State later in the season.

Not to be totally outdone, the following teams have the upside to be dangerous as possible at-large bids into the CFP.

Indiana

Fernando Mendoza's successor Josh Hoover, the TCU transfer, slots in at 12th in QB EPA. This team is 23rd overall in SOS with a revealing split: a difficult passing slate (114th) but a 46th-ranked run-defense schedule, the fourth-easiest in the conference. The reigning champs could sniff out a 10-win season..

Georgia

Georgia CFP qualifier payouts: 1.31x Yes | 2.94x No

The Bulldogs are 13th in overall SOS, including the No. 110 pass-defense schedule and the 131st run-defense schedule. Nothing about Georgia's stat line in December will be inflated, which is precisely why even 9-3 gets them in.

Oregon

Oregon CFP qualifier payouts: 1.29x Yes | 3.22x No

Returner Dante Moore is 14th in QB EPA. The Ducks have the No. 24 SOS and are ninth in the conference with the No. 99 pass-defense schedule and seventh with the 63rd-ranked run-defense schedule. An honest gauntlet this year could make the resume respectable.

BYU

BYU CFP qualifier payouts: 3.22x Yes | 1.29x No

The Cougars have the sharpest split of anyone here, evidenced by the 122nd pass-defense schedule butting heads with the 61st run-defense schedule (third-friendliest in the league). QB Bear Bachmeier's dual-threat profile (0.292 EPA/play, including designed runs) is a perfect fit for that shape.

Notre Dame

Notre Dame CFP qualifier payouts: 1.14x Yes | 4.76x No

CJ Carr (16th in QB EPA) inherits the biggest statistical tailwind on the board, potentially benefiting from the sixth-softest pass-defense schedule in the country. The 87th run-defense schedule and 55th overall SOS may hurt the Fighting Irish, though. The biggest risk is no conference title game, and their wins feel expected.

Ole Miss

Ole Miss CFP qualifier payouts: 2.43x Yes | 1.51x No

The hardest genuine two-way draw in the field. Ole Miss owns the No. 12 SOS and faces the 112th-ranked pass-defense schedule with the 135th-ranked run-defense schedule. QB Trinidad Chambliss put up 0.336 EPA/play in 2025; doing that again against this schedule would be the committee's favorite kind of 9-3.

Oklahoma

Oklahoma CFP qualifier payouts: 2.43x Yes | 1.51x No

This is where we take the last spot away from Texas; their head-to-head matchup will decide a lot for these two teams' playoff chances. Both play a brutal slate (Oklahoma is third in SOS, Texas is first).

College Football Playoff Bubble: Who Just Misses

Don't sleep on these two teams, even if they don't slot directly into the field in this preview.

Texas

Texas CFP qualifier payouts: 1.49x Yes | 2.38x No

The hardest schedule in America may ruin Texas' playoff chances.  

The Longhorns also own the 126th-ranked pass-defense schedule, the toughest passing draw of any SEC contender, with the 117th run-defense schedule on top of that.

Washington

Washington CFP qualifier payouts: 4.16x Yes | 1.14x No

Everything about Washington reads like a playoff team until you look at the passing schedule.

No. 15 overall SOS? Fine. The 128th pass-defense schedule is the hardest passing draw of anyone in this projection. QB Demond Williams Jr. left a bad taste in a few people's mouths, but he ranked 28th in QB EPA last year. HC Jeff Fisch is 26-5 when laying 3+ points and now has a team facing the No. 82 run-defense schedule.

Penn State

Penn State CFP qualifier payouts: 3.12x Yes | 1.31x No

Penn State has the biggest schedule edge in the country and has a well-experienced QB at the helm.

The Nittany Lions face the 24th-softest pass-defense schedule in America and the easiest passing slate of all 18 Big Ten teams. That's the largest single-board edge any power-conference contender received in 2026. It all lands on Rocco Becht, a fifth-year senior who graded 42nd of 97 qualified starters at 0.263 EPA/play across 369 proven plays at Iowa State.

The ground game isn't fighting uphill, either, owning the 57th run-defense schedule nationally, sixth-easiest in conference. Critically, the 41st overall SOS means 10-2 may be easily attainable.

USC

USC CFP qualifier payouts: 2.7x Yes | 1.38x No

Jayden Maiava was just the No. 2 QB in America at 0.477 EPA/play over 429 plays. USC is also 14th in the power ratings.

The schedule is what turns that into a resume rather than a stat line. The Trojans are 18th overall in SOS, which means nobody gets to call this soft, while both efficiency boards sit almost exactly at league average (96th pass-defense schedule and 98th run-defense schedule). Ten wins on a top-20 schedule would get them in.
