Following Tuesday’s win as 4.5-point underdogs, the 76ers are favored by 2.5 points for the spread tonight. Thursday’s 237.5 over/under is also an increase from Philadelphia’s 231.5 total vs. the Knicks.

Despite shooting only 41.6% from the field and 27.5% on 3-pointers, the 76ers won a defensive battle vs. the Knicks. In the 106-100 final, Philadelphia limited New York to only 37.2% shooting — spoiling the Knicks’ ring night.

Philly’s offseason acquisitions — G/F Jaylen Brown and F LeBron James — made immediate impacts.

Brown tallied 19 points while shooting 50.0% from the field and 3-point line. James posted only 14 points, but he stuffed the stat sheet with 9 rebounds and 7 assists. LeBron’s playmaking was on display, backed by a team-best 35.0% assist rate and 7.00 assist-to-turnover ratio, per NBA.com.

As the Cavaliers’ first game of the 2026-27 season, they have a slightly altered lineup, led by G/F Peyton Watson starting at small forward. Cleveland’s main focus was on improved wing play, with F Dean Wade and G Max Strus departing in the offseason.

Watson, G Sam Merrill, and G/F Jaylon Tyson will likely take on most of the wing responsibilities in the upcoming campaign. After displaying breakout potential thanks to 14.6 points per game last season, Watson has a difficult test in his first game in a Cavaliers uniform against Jaylen Brown.

According to PrizePicks, the 76ers have the shortest payout to win the Eastern Conference (4x), and the Cavs are tied for the sixth-shortest payout (10x). Tonight should be a good litmus test for if Cleveland can contend in the East.

Cavaliers vs. 76ers Prediction on Spread – 10/22/26

The 76ers were dragged into a slow-paced Knicks game on NBA Opening Night. New York had the sixth-slowest pace in the league last season. The Cavaliers finished with the 13th-quickest tempo in 2025-26, bringing a contrasting style.

While Philly altered its roster in the offseason, the backcourt of G Tyrese Maxey and G V.J. Edgecombe remains the same, and the Sixers have continuity on the coaching staff with Nick Nurse manning head coach since 2023.

Since Nurse took over, the 76ers have been among the top 16 slowest paces the last three seasons. But Philly attempted 89.0 field goal attempts per game (13th) last season, and it posted 89 shots on opening night.

Cleveland didn’t play games as ugly as New York last season, likely putting the Sixers in a more favorable scoring environment tonight. In fact, the Cavaliers racked up 117.4 PPG (sixth) while allowing 114.6 PPG (14th).

Adding Peyton Watson in the offseason may improve Cleveland’s wing play, but I’m skeptical about his impact on the defensive end. The Nuggets’ team 116.0 defensive rating (21st) wasn’t great exposure for Watson last season, but he still posted a 117.6 defensive rating that was even higher.

Cavaliers F Evan Mobley, the 2024-25 Defensive Player of the Year, may pose problems for F LeBron James, but G/F Jaylen Brown could thrive vs. Watson. Further, Cleveland C Jarrett Allen (knee) is questionable, per the NBA injury report.

If Allen cannot go, that should lead to a smaller lineup for the Cavs, potentially putting Mobley at center while Watson and G/F Jaylon Tyson man small forward and power forward. This would set up nicely for the Sixers to play bully ball through C Joel Embiid and LeBron.

The rebounding battle also likely becomes a clear concern if Allen is out. Embiid (11), James (9), and Brown (8) combined for 28 boards on Opening Night. Allen has a career average of 9.2 rebounds per game (RPG); this, paired with a potential size disadvantage, would put the Cavs in danger in the frontcourt.

Cavaliers vs. 76ers Picks, Player Stats on PrizePicks – 10/22/26

The top Cavaliers vs. 76ers player picks for Thursday, October 22, on PrizePicks include Peyton Watson and Jaylen Brown.

Cavaliers G/F Peyton Watson vs. 76ers: 4.0 3-point Attempts

  • The Cavaliers are likely hoping Peyton Watson is the key to pushing Cleveland to another NBA Finals appearance. Standing at 6’8” with a 7” wingspan, he brings an ideal size for an NBA wing.
  • That wingspan often allows Watson to shoot over defenders, and he can hunt his own shot, supported by last season’s 21.4 creation rate jumping from 4.9 in 2024-25, per databallr.
  • After shooting 49.1% from the field and 41.1% triples last season, Watson’s role should feature plenty of usage on offense.
  • His 3-point shot is something to key on, as he logged a career-high 3.6 attempts per game last year. The Cavaliers had a 44.4% 3-point shot frequency (ninth) compared to the Nuggets’ 41.1% (17th) last season, perhaps encouraging Watson to shoot even more triples.
Add Peyton Watson to your PrizePicks lineup now.

76ers G/F Jaylen Brown vs. Cavaliers: 20 Points

  • As mentioned, Jaylen Brown was very efficient in his 76ers debut, knocking down 7 of 14 shots and 2 of 4 looks from beyond the arc.
  • Peyton Watson’s 117.6 defensive rating from 2025-26 draws some concern. If Cleveland’s lineup shifts with Jarrett Allen out, that could mean G/F Jaylon Tyson defends Brown; Tyson has a 6’6” wingspan, lacking to Brown’s 7’0” wingspan.
  • The Cavs are a quicker-paced team compared to the Knicks, suggesting Brown’s 14 shots from Opening Night may increase. He recorded over 17.0 field goal attempts per contest in his previous six seasons.
  • Cleveland surrendered a 43.2% 3-point shot frequency (22nd) last season, and Brown posted at least 2.0 made triples per game in six of his past seven campaigns.

The 76ers look to follow up an impressive road win vs. the Knicks, while the Cavaliers open their 2026-27 season in Philadelphia. LeBron James facing his former team is perhaps the main storyline of tonight, but wing play between Peyton Watson and Jaylen Brown could be what determines tonight’s outcome.
