The Buccaneers’ hopes of getting back in the NFC South race and saving their season got a boost this week with the return of QB Baker Mayfield. The franchise QB suffered a thumb injury in Week 3, with rookie Jalon Daniels starting the last three games.
While they did win their only game of the season under Daniels, the offensive production dropped from nearly 21 points per game to 19.0, and passing yards dropped from 185.0 yards per game under Mayfield to 144.7 yards per game. Daniels also threw 5 INTs in his three starts, compared to Mayfield’s 2 INTs.
The offense became more run-dependent, which worked in the win over the Cowboys; Tampa Bay rushed for a season-high 241 yards vs. Dallas, but that also failed when the Bucs could not hold a lead over the Steelers last week.
Like last year, the Panthers are atop the NFC South. Carolina held a share of the divisional lead from Week 13 last year and has had at least a share after all six weeks this season.
QB Bryce Young is leading a Panthers offense that tops the NFL in passing and is second in total yards. His NFL-leading 309.8 yards per game are a notable improvement over last year’s 188.2. He's also produced 15 completions of at least 25 yards, the third-most in the league.
The Panthers got to the top of the division with impressive wins over the Lions and Eagles. While the offense has been impressive, Carolina needs more consistency on the defensive side, entering the matchup last in rush yards allowed per play (5.12) and 25th in yards allowed (354.2).
Carolina will be without edge rushers Jaelan Phillips and Thomas Incoom, but the Bucs are also missing WR Emeka Egbuka from their offense.
