The New England Patriots have a massive opportunity to get revenge as they kick off the 2026 NFL regular season. Unfortunately for head coach Mike Vrabel’s crew, RB TreVeyon Henderson is banged up heading into Wednesday’s Super Bowl LX rematch vs. the Seattle Seahawks.
Following an ankle injury in practice last month, the sophomore halfback has been hard at work trying to get back to full strength. Did he recover in time to be available for kickoff at 8:20 p.m. ET?

TreVeyon Henderson Injury Update: Will Henderson Play in Week 1 vs. Seahawks?
Despite his best efforts, Henderson was unable to make enough progress in his rehab. The former second-round pick traveled with the team ahead of this week’s bout in Seattle, albeit just to miss practice each day and get ruled out on Tuesday with the ankle designation.
In an August 24 practice at the Patriots’ team facility, Henderson sustained the ailment and hasn’t practiced since. The injury may have had something to do with an unreliable surface that day, which the running back cited as a reason why “everybody was slipping.”
In his debut campaign out of Ohio State, Henderson played in all 17 regular-season games for New England. He toted the ball 180 times on the ground, racking up 911 yards and 9 TDs while also adding 35 receptions on 42 targets for 221 yards and a score as a receiver.
His box score looks great, yet underlying metrics signal that Henderson wasn’t that effective. Reception Perception, for example, highlighted his low explosive play rate and lack of success on outside runs.
After beginning the year in Seattle, the Patriots have 11 days off before their home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Should Henderson get back to practice between now and then, perhaps he can be available for Week 2. If not, it’d be a September 27 outing vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars as his targeted return date.

Patriots Fantasy Football Outlook: Target Rhamondre Stevenson With Henderson Out?
Coming into a new season, the Patriots’ RB situation is a little complicated, and that’s without factoring in an injury for Henderson.
In fantasy land, for instance, FantasyPros’ average draft position in point-per-reception leagues indicates that Henderson and fellow halfback Rhamondre Stevenson are going off the board as pick Nos. 67 and 66, respectively, making them RBs 27 and 26.
This makes sense, as Henderson finished 2025 as RB19 with a total of 188.7 fantasy points but benefited from a couple of outings with Stevenson out. Stevenson, meanwhile, was RB25 with 162.8 points, producing at a more palatable clip when on the field.
According to Pro Football Focus, Stevenson averaged 3.47 yards after contact per attempt and forced 46 missed tackles to Henderson’s marks of 3.27 and 31. Additionally, the former matched the latter’s 19 runs of 10+ yards. Stevenson also fared better as a receiving weapon, logging a 9.44% target share (SumerSports) while Henderson checked in at 8.71%.
TE Hunter Henry and new WR A.J. Brown will surely be targeted in the passing game, but it isn’t like New England will abandon feeding the RB position without Henderson. Of Stevenson’s 14 games played in 2025, he had at least 10 touches in eight of them.
There’s a lack of depth behind the Patriots’ lead RB duo — Corey Kiner isn’t going to save any lineups — but New England is better equipped to lose someone like Henderson than most teams would be.
