Thunder Injury Report: Updates on Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell for Game 4
Per the NBA’s official injury report for Sunday, Williams is listed as questionable with left hamstring soreness. Mitchell, on the other hand, is out due to a right soleus (calf) strain.
Let’s dive into both players’ injury situations ahead of Game 4.
Is Jalen Williams Playing in Game 4 vs. Spurs?
Williams had finally worked his way back from a hamstring injury to play in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, then he got hurt in Game 2. He’s dealt with ailments for both hamstrings this year twice, reaggravating things on the court.
Prior to Game 3, Williams was questionable and national reporting indicated that the team would take a “day-to-day, game-to-game” approach with evaluating him. Has anything changed between Friday and now? He still carries the same designation, although there hasn’t been as much preliminary buzz about him likely missing the contest.
Considering the Thunder’s 2-1 series lead, it might make more sense to see how this one plays out and then double back to the Williams situation once the team touches down in Oklahoma City for Game 5. Williams surely wants to play, but his lack of durability in either hamstring must be factored in.
Time will tell if J-Dub is available on Sunday night. If he is, PrizePicks has a good handful of projections for the All-Star forward.
Jalen Williams vs. Spurs Projections: 14 Points / 3.5 Rebounds / 3.5 Assists
Ajay Mitchell Ruled Out for Game 4 vs. Spurs
Mitchell, meanwhile, was filling in admirably for Williams until he got hurt in Game 3. Thus far in the playoffs, the 23-year-old SG is averaging 15.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game on 46.0% shooting from the field. He has 20+ points in four of 11 chances.
Unfortunately, Mitchell sustained his calf injury in Game 3 on Friday when trying to defend a layup attempt in the fast break. He played just under 17 minutes to that point, scoring all of 2 points on 1-for-5 shooting.
Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault didn’t offer much of an update leading into Game 4, but the team ruling Mitchell out doesn’t necessarily bode well for him with next week on the horizon. More information on his recovery timeline could come out once the team returns to Oklahoma City.
In 57 regular-season games, Mitchell averaged 13.6 PPG. He finished fifth in Sixth Man of the Year voting, largely due to the scoring punch he gave Oklahoma City in his 25.8 nightly minutes.
What Players to Target on PrizePicks if Williams is Out?
Williams’ impact is tough to figure out, as metrics reflect the Thunder being slightly worse when he’s on the floor. It’s been such a strange year for him that it’s hard to take away too much from that. The case for Mitchell is different.
In all games since the start of the season, Oklahoma City is 9.9 points per 100 possessions better when Mitchell is playing, per databallr. That means from both a volume and efficiency standpoint, someone will have to step up on Sunday. Who could it be?
SG Alex Caruso has enjoyed plenty of success this series and sees a 5.4% usage rate spike without Williams. When Mitchell sits, G Jared McCain pours in 6.5 more points per 75. Lastly, SG Cason Wallace shoots 2.2% better from 3-point range in Mitchell-less minutes.
Here are the Thunder players who may benefit most on PrizePicks with Mitchell out and Williams still banged up, as well as their stat projections for tonight.
- Alex Caruso vs. Spurs Projections: 10.5 Points / 3.5 Rebounds / 2 3-PT Made
- Jared McCain vs. Spurs Projections: 13.5 Points / 2 3-PT Made / 17 Pts + Rebs + Asts
- Cason Wallace vs. Spurs Projections: 8.5 Points / 1.5 Assists (Goblin) / 5 Rebs + Asts
Sometimes, it’s about rolling with the hot hand. That’s been Caruso in this series, but McCain isn’t far behind if his 3-ball continues to drop.

With Ajay Mitchell out, the Thunder are even more shorthanded in their guard rotation. A potential Williams return would help things at the wing spot, but caution may prevail given the nature of his injury.
