Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp: Four Players To Watch
Here are the key players or depth chart situations to watch during the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp.
Eagles RBs Depth Chart
There is zero debate on who is the featured running back for the Eagles, as Saquon Barkley had a memorable season with 2,283 yards from scrimmage and 15 touchdowns. The question is: who will back him up.
This could become a competition between three guys, and it could be a chance for the rookie RB Montrell Johnson Jr. to move up the depth chart. Will Shipley was not impressive in the limited chances he got last season, averaging 2.7 yards on 30 carries.
The Eagles also signed former Packers RB AJ Dillon, who missed all of last season with a recurring neck injury and has been injury-prone throughout his career.
Johnson had an incredible college career at Louisiana and Florida, where he averaged 5.5 yards per carry. He’s cemented as an up-the-gut power back and could be the change-of-pace running back to counter Barkley’s speed.
S Andrew Mukuba
With C.J. Gardner-Johnson traded in the offseason, this opens up a spot at safety next to Reed Blankenship. There will be a few players who could compete for the spot.
Sydney Brown had a solid 2023 rookie campaign, but saw less playing time last season. That was because Tristin McCollum saw an increase in snaps from his previous season.
Each of them could be overtaken by Mukuba, whom the Eagles grabbed in the second round this past draft. Like Gardner-Johnson, Mukuba is a versatile player who can shadow and press in one-on-one coverage, as we saw with a career 23 passes defended, and last year had five interceptions with Texas.
He may not get those first-team reps at the start of camp, but his talent will help him move up the depth chart.
WR Jahan Dotson
Last season, the Eagles made a rare in-division trade with the Commanders to land Jahan Dotson. It was thought he would have a significant role as the slot receiver to alleviate A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith, but it was an underwhelming season with 19 catches for 216 yards, and he never found the end zone.
He did come up with two receptions for 42 yards in the Super Bowl, nearly scoring a touchdown.
Now he will likely be competing for a roster spot because his contract is team-friendly, and if he is cut, it will be a small cap hit. He will have a lot of competition at the position with guys like Terrace Marshall, Danny Gray, and Johnny Wilson. If he doesn’t come out of the gate strong, he could be out in Philly.
LB Jihaad Campbell
The Eagles were aggressive in drafting Alabama LB Jihaad Campbell by trading up a spot in the first round to get the linebacker from Alabama. Campbell has top-ten potential, but his draft stock diminished due to injury concerns.
He missed rookie and mini-camp due to offseason shoulder surgery, but should be ready for training camp. It will be important to see how he looks to see if he’s a full go. We also watch how Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio uses him; will he play strictly as a linebacker, or move around?
Campbell is a versatile player who can be used as a pass rusher, run stopper, or drop back into coverage, which is a huge advantage for this defensive scheme — and for added depth. Fangio likes those types of players, and it's likely the reason Philadelphia grabbed him. If he can stay on the field, then there’s a possibility of a breakout rookie season.
