Jaren Jackson Jr. to Jazz: Trade Details
Jackson is the centerpiece of Tuesday's trade and will be a huge part of Utah’s frontcourt going forward. In the trade, the Jazz also acquired C Jock Landale, along with G John Konchar and G Vince Williams Jr.
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies landed three first-round picks in addition to rookie G Walter Clayton Jr., F Kyle Anderson, F Taylor Hendricks, and F Georges Niang, per Charania.
Memphis acquired the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2027 first-round pick, which was viewed as the most desirable among the first-rounders that were owned by the Jazz in 2027.
As a result of Tuesday’s trade, the Grizzlies now own 12 first-round picks over the next seven seasons, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Only the Oklahoma City Thunder and Brooklyn Nets have more draft capital in that span.
Jackson is a two-time All-Star (2023, 2025) and the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2022-23. The versatile big man was originally selected by Memphis with the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft and has spent his entire eight-year professional career with the franchise.
The Grizzlies' talented big man owns career averages of 18.5 points and 5.6 rebounds, while shooting 35.1% from beyond the arc. In 45 games this season, Jackson has averaged 19.2 PPG and 5.8 RPG, in addition to shooting 35.9% from long range.
JJJ signed a five-year, $240 million contract extension with Memphis in June 2025, and the deal includes a $53.5 million player option for the 2029-30 campaign.
It’s a very aggressive move for a younger Jazz team that has missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons.
However, the future could be a lot brighter as the franchise will now have Jackson, star F Lauri Markkanen, and C Walker Kessler together in a talented front court — although 7-foot-2 Kessler is out for the year (shoulder surgery) and is slated to be a restricted free agent this summer.
But this year still looks like a wash for the Jazz. After the trade, the Jazz (15-35) now carry a 14.28x payout to make the NBA Playoffs on PrizePicks Team Picks, above only two other Western Conference teams.
From the Grizzlies perspective, it’s the latest move that signifies that the franchise is moving towards a rebuild. Memphis traded SG Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic last offseason and is reportedly looking to move on from star PG Ja Morant via trade.
