The Last Patriots vs. Seahawks Super Bowl: What Happened, Who Won?

On February 1, 2015, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, Patriots and Seahawks battled in Super Bowl XLIX. And it was a good one.

How Did Each Team Reach Super Bowl XLIX?

The 2014 season marked one of the rare occasions in which both number-one seeds advanced to the Super Bowl.

The Patriots put together a 12-4 regular-season mark to land the AFC’s top seed. After securing a first-round bye, New England outlasted the Baltimore Ravens with a 35-31 decision in the Divisional Round thanks to a late fourth-quarter touchdown pass to on-the-D.L. WR Brandon LaFell.

In the AFC Championship Game, the Patriots dominated the Indianapolis Colts in a 45-7 rout. QB Tom Brady completed 23-of-35 passes for 226 yards and 3 touchdowns, while the Pats' defense forced Colts QB Andrew Luck to throw a pair of picks.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks began their playoff run with a 31-17 dub against the Carolina Panthers in a game they controlled the majority of the way.

In the NFC Championship Game, Seattle got all they could handle from the Green Bay Packers in a 28-22 overtime victory. Packers K Mason Crosby connected on a 48-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. However, Seahawks QB Russell Wilson was able to find WR Jermaine Kearse on a 35-yard touchdown pass to clinch the Super Bowl berth.

How Did Super Bowl XLIX Play Out?

Entering Super Bowl XLIX, it was expected to be a very close affair. After all, the Patriots closed as just one-point favorites.

It proved to be a game that featured several momentum swings throughout. After a scoreless opening quarter, the Patriots and Seahawks exchanged touchdowns throughout the first half. Wilson found WR Chris Matthews for an 11-yard touchdown with just two seconds remaining in the second quarter to tie the game at 14-14 heading into the break.

The third quarter really belonged to Seattle, which ended up taking a 24-14 advantage. Wilson tossed his second touchdown pass of the evening when he found WR Doug Baldwin on a three-yard score to put the Seahawks in control.

However, as football fans have seen on many occasions, Brady can never be counted out. With 7:55 remaining in the fourth quarter, Brady connected with WR Danny Amendola on a four-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 24-21.

After forcing a three-and-out on Seattle’s ensuing possession, New England seized their opportunity to regain the lead. Brady found WR Julian Edelman on a three-yard touchdown in which the veteran wideout was able to shake CB Tharold Simon.

That set the stage for one of the most dramatic endings in Super Bowl history. The Seahawks embarked on a seven-play, 79-yard drive in which they were at the one-yard line with under a minute to go. However, rather than hand the ball off to RB Marshawn Lynch, the Seahawks chose to throw it at the goal line, and Wilson was intercepted by CB Malcolm Butler.

The Patriots were able to run out the clock and captured their fourth Super Bowl title in the process.
