In a tournament that’s seen upset after upset, we got another shocker in the French Open quarterfinals.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was up 6-3, 4-1 against Diana Shnaider on Wednesday — and all but assured another trip to a Grand Slam semifinal. Instead, windy conditions and a mental unravelling would lead to Sabalenka falling apart down the stretch.

Shnaider didn’t let the opportunity slip, coming back to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 and sealing her spot in today’s French Open semifinal.

Shnaider is set to take on Maja Chwalinska, a qualifier who kept her Cinderella run alive with an upset of her own against Anna Kalinskaya. Chwalinska will play her ninth match in 18 days on Thursday.

These two surprise semifinalists now go toe to toe for a trip to the Roland Garros women’s singles final.

Below, we’ll break down our Diana Shnaider vs. Maja Chwalinska prediction, recent form, and pick for the French Open semifinal, including a PrizePicks pick.

The Shnaider vs. Chwalinska match is slated to start shortly after the first women’s semifinal, Kostyuk vs. Andreeva, which will begin at roughly 9:00 a.m. ET. This year’s French Open is being covered on TNT, truTV, and HBO Max.

Diana Shnaider vs. Maja Chwalinska Prediction for the French Open Semifinal — Thursday, June 4

Match Winner Payouts: Shnaider 1.51x | Chwalinska 2.43x
Round: Women’s Singles Semifinals
2026 Record Entering the French Open: Shnaider 13-11 | Chwalinska 20-9
Head-to-Head Record: Shnaider leads 1-0
Scheduled Time: After Kostyuk vs. Andreeva Semifinal (9 a.m. ET start)
How to Watch: TNT/HBO Max

Entering 2026 Roland Garros, Diana Shnaider had never advanced past the second round at Roland Garros. Maja Chwalinska had never advanced past the second round in any major. Yet now, one of these two women will go on to play for the championship this weekend.

But give credit where credit is due. Shnaider engineered a career-defining comeback win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to get here, just her second-ever victory over a top-10 opponent.

Meanwhile, Chwalinska made her way here through qualifying — an impressive feat in and of itself — but has done so while dropping only one set across eight matches.

Based on their rankings, Shnaider (world No. 23) is the rightful favorite over Chwalinska (world No. 114) in this semifinal. Shnaider also just toppled a giant in Sabalenka, and she also took out major champion Madison Keys in the round prior.

Both of those three-setters ended with emphatic 6-0 sets, too.

At the same time, it’s difficult to predict how this will play out because the latter is a bit of a wild card. Chwalinska’s 2026 record is built almost entirely against lesser competition in low-level tournaments, rarely facing players ranked inside even the top 50.

That said, she won a WTA 125 clay event in April, and perhaps that was the confidence builder she needed to go on this French Open run, highlighted by straight-sets wins over seeded players Elise Mertens and Anna Kalinskaya.

We probably can’t rule out Chwalinska being a live underdog against an opponent who is also in unfamiliar territory.

Per Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, Shnaider is showing a 67.4% win probability versus Chwalinska.

Shnaider vs. Chwalinska Pick for 2026 French Open Semifinal

Shnaider vs. Chwalinska — 21.5 Total Games (Match)

In the French Open, Shnaider has won 61% of her second-serve points and 53% of her return points, both excellent marks that rank among the best in the tournament. Chwalinska’s been right there with her, though, winning 58% of her second-serve points and 51% of her return points.

Neither player poses much of a threat to turn the tide on first serve via aces. Shnaider has tallied only four aces while Chwalinska has logged three.

If both players continue to play at a high level, we could be looking at thin margins separating the two. Shnaider’s last two matches have gone three sets, and despite bageling her opponent in the deciding set both times, those matches reached 24 and 27 total match games.
