McGregor rose to superstardom with an undefeated start to his UFC career out of Dublin. He captured both the featherweight and lightweight championships by way of knockout, setting up a 2018 fight with undefeated Russian wrestler Khabib Nurmagomedov after a pro boxing match opposite Floyd “Money” Mayweather in 2017.

In a fight filled with outside-the-cage antics, Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor in the fourth round to wrestle away McGregor's title.

McGregor has since won just once in MMA, against Donald Cerrone in 2020, and has lost another pair of bouts to Dustin Poirier. McGregor was scheduled to fight at UFC 303 in 2024 vs. Michael Chandler, but the fight was canceled after McGregor broke his toe just two weeks before the fight.

The 37-year-old will end his layoff against Max Holloway, whom he defeated by unanimous decision in 2013 at featherweight. Holloway is a former featherweight champion and “BMF” champion in UFC — best known for his viral 2024 knockout of Justin Gaethje at UFC 300.

When Was Conor McGregor's Last Fight in UFC?

Conor McGregor’s last UFC fight was on July 10, 2021, against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. The fight ended after Round 1 when McGregor suffered a broken leg, giving Poirier the TKO win by doctor stoppage.

Although it was an unfortunate finish, McGregor had previously lost to Dustin Poirier vs. second-round KO in January 2021 at UFC 264.

That injury in July 2021 kicked off McGregor’s long layoff from the octagon, which included recovery, a canceled 2024 fight vs. Michael Chandler, and outside-the-cage legal issues before his scheduled return against Max Holloway at UFC 329 this Saturday.

Where Has Conor McGregor Been Since His Last UFC Fight in 2021?

Conor McGregor’s disappearance has been due to a variety of factors, starting with a recovery from the broken leg he suffered the last time we saw him in the octagon.

McGregor crumbled in Round 2 against the aforementioned Poirier due to the injury. It was an unceremonious end to the trilogy, in which McGregor promised revenge.

A New York Times investigation uncovered that McGregor was taking banned substances to aid his recovery from the leg injury. This struggle was apparent as McGregor would not enter the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) testing pool, as he would have needed six months of testing before returning to competition.

UFC stopped using USADA for drug testing at the start of 2024 in an attempt to get McGregor back in the cage — which, reportedly, was a primary cause of the split.

McGregor was eventually booked to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June 2024, but that fight was canceled after McGregor suffered a broken toe in training.

Per the BBC, McGregor has also been involved in an ongoing legal dispute for a sexual assault case dating back to 2018. He lost a 2025 appeal in Dublin civil court, which ordered him to pay 206,000 pounds to the victim.

It has been a long, arduous road for McGregor to get back into the octagon, but he claims he’s reformed his life to lock in for a "second" MMA career.
