Things couldn’t have gone better for the United States in their 2026 World Cup opener vs. Paraguay on Friday. USMNT took a 3-0 lead to halftime, on their way to a 4-1 win.

USMNT golden boy Christian Pulisic had already tallied an assist and looked to be in perfect form in the first 45. But after halftime, Pulisic did not return to the game, and now he is “day-to-day” with a calf injury.

Pulisic has not practiced fully since taking the knock in the opener, working off to the side in both practices. That’s created some concern that the offensive linchpin could miss the United States’ game vs. Australia on Friday. June 19, at 3 p.m. ET in Seattle.

Below, we’ll give you the latest Christian Pulisic injury updates, including everything we know about Pulisic’s injury out of the USMNT camp in Irvine, Calif., and if he will be fit to play for Friday’s World Cup match.

Christian Pulisic Injury Update: Will Pulisic Play for USMNT vs. Australia?

Pulisic came off at halftime vs. Paraguay, saying after the match that he “got a bit of a kick” to the back of the calf. The injury has been reported to be pre-existing before the match, which points to a potential aggravation, which could be cause for concern.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has been intentionally hush on Pulisic’s injury, but did say that he “could not walk” before the second half, as his muscles had seized up during the break. That forced the USMNT manager to make a last minute decision for Sebastian Berhalter.

That, in addition to the potential reaggravation, may be the biggest concern of all. In the two days since, Pulisic has been limited in practice, with a lighter, modified training session.

Pulisic has been a key part of the USMNT attack for the better part of a decade, with 33 goals and 21 assists in 87 caps, per US Soccer.

Will Christian Pulisic Play vs. Australia on Friday?

After USA’s 4-1 win vs. Paraguay, and Australia’s 2-0 upset over Turkey, Pulisic’s injury status is key in a game that could decide the winner of Group D. A win vs. Australia will clinch the No. 1 spot in the group, which USA is currently heavily favored to win (1.53x payout on PrizePicks).

All signs point to Pulisic playing vs. Australia, based on concrete word coming out of camp, though he is currently being called day-to-day. USMNT defensive midfielder Tyler Adams said “Christian will be ready… let’s relax.” Meanwhile, USMNT striker Tim Weah said, “He looks normal, he’s fit,” after a training session this week, per HITC.

FOX’s Jenny Taft reported the Pulisic “will be ready to go” vs. Australia, in a crucial game that could ultimately decide who sits at the top of Group D when it’s over.

Overall, there seems to be optimism that Pulisic will be ready to play — or at least, the team is presenting it that way. If he doesn’t play, it’ll likely be Sebastian Berhalter in his place.

The 27-year-old Pulisic has previously dealt with a number of other injuries at AC Milan this season, keeping him sidelined for nearly 2 months total, including a thigh/gluteal strain, hip bursitis, and a hamstring injury.

Christian Pulisic Stats vs. Paraguay in 2026 World Cup

Pulisic was having a terrific outing in his 2026 World Cup debut on Friday before the injury, looking to be every bit of the engine he was expected to be for the USA soccer team.

In just 45 minutes, the USMNT star finished with an assist, 2 chances created, 1 tackle, and 18 completed passes on 22 attempts (81.8%) vs. Paraguay.

The USA midfielder split two defenders to help set up an own goal in the seventh minute, then laid up a perfect pass for striker Folarin Balogun to put in the second goal in the 31st minute.

The assist was Pulisic’s third in just five World Cup caps — more than Cristiano Ronaldo has managed in 22.

Make USA World Cup Picks on PrizePicks

Christian Pulisic’s status has suddenly become the most important variable in USA vs. Australia on Friday afternoon. For as much as Balogun has arrived, Pulisic remains the offensive engine of this team, and no one on the roster can replicate what he does.

The USMNT will be favored to win vs. Australia — and clinch the top spot in Group D — with or without their star midfielder, but their offensive ceiling will drop considerably without him on the pitch.
