Fortunately for the 49ers, there doesn’t appear to be reason to hit the panic button just yet. McCaffrey has returned to practice this week, presumably putting him on track to be active vs. the Rams.
San Francisco’s official injury report will shed some additional light on the situation. It’s worth noting that McCaffrey has sat out early-week practices to rest before; doing so again wouldn’t be anything new. If he’s truly just a bit stiff, it makes sense for the 49ers to exercise some caution with a grueling season ahead.
McCaffrey missed time with calf/Achilles tightness in the past, as well as hamstring and thigh injuries. The reigning Comeback Player of the Year played in all 17 games a season ago, logging a league-leading 413 touches in the process.
On a career-high 311 carries, he managed 1,202 yards and 10 TDs while adding 102 receptions for another 924 yards and 7 TDs. It marked his fifth straight campaign averaging at least 5.0 yards per touch, cementing his status as perhaps the premier dual-threat player in the sport.
For his efforts a season ago, CMC was named to the All-Pro First Team and finished second in Offensive Player of the Year voting and fourth in MVP voting.

It’s virtually impossible to replace someone who collected 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 total TDs just a year ago, and that’s without considering the constant uncertainty regarding the durability of WR Mike Evans and second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall already being done for the year.
Via FantasyPros, McCaffrey’s average draft position (ADP) in point-per-reception (PPR) formats is fifth overall, good for RB3. It’s hard to find many more sought-after pieces than him.
With that said, who could the 49ers turn to if McCaffrey has his snaps managed or sits out games altogether? On the RB depth chart, third-round rookie Kaelon Black and sophomore Jordan James make the most sense.
In his final season with the Indiana Hoosiers, Black averaged 3.47 yards after contact per attempt (per Pro Football Focus) and forced 30 missed tackles. James appeared in three games last season but played just 11 combined snaps between offense and special teams. It’s safe to say the Niners’ halfback depth is unproven at best.
In the passing game, look to rookie WR De’Zhaun Stribling, WR Deebo Samuel, and TE George Kittle. Stribling has come on strong throughout the summer and already projects to benefit from Pearsall’s unfortunate absence, and Samuel’s ability to take short-range passes and break off chunk gains is a natural fit in the offense. McCaffrey spent 14.4% of his snaps in the slot last year, further fitting that profile.
Kittle is the wild card. At his peak, he’s one of the best in the game, but he’s trying to work back quickly from an Achilles rupture. That’s reflected in his current ADP (78, TE8 overall), as fantasy managers don’t want to put too much responsibility on him too soon.
That’s like the same with the 49ers, regardless of McCaffrey’s status.
