Steph Curry Injury Update: Out For Game 4 Tonight
It took seven games for the Warriors to get past the Rockets in the first round. It set up an intriguing Western Conference semifinals matchup against the Timberwolves in the conference semis.
However, the Warriors vs. Timberwolves matchup was quickly impacted by Warriors PG Steph Curry’s hamstring injury in Game 1.
Curry missed the last two games against the Timberwolves and will not play in Game 4 tonight, leaving additional opportunities for players like Jonathan Kuminga. Is Steph Curry Playing Tonight in Game 4?
Following his injury in Game 1, it was reported that Curry would miss at least one week. On Saturday, Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Curry is targeting a return for Game 6 of this series. However, there’s a chance that they don’t make it to Game 6 with the Timberwolves having a 2-1 series lead heading into Game 4, losing both games without Curry.
The Warriors need several players to step up in the scoring department with Curry injured to survive until he can return. While Warriors SF Jimmy Butler only scored 17 points in Game 2, he scored 33 points and took 26 shots in Game 3. Warriors G/F Buddy Hield has also combined for 29 points over the last two games.
In Game 2, the Warriors started C Quentin Post in place of Curry. He played just three minutes. Warriors C Trayce Jackson-Davis started in place of Post in Game 3, but logged just 11 minutes. G Gary Payton II played 26 minutes off the bench in Game 3, scoring two points on just four shot attempts.
The player who has arguably been impacted the most by Curry’s absence is Warriors PF Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga had mostly fallen out of the rotation, appearing in just three of the seven games against the Rockets in the previous round. However, he logged 26 minutes and scored 18 points in Game 2 against the Timberwolves. In Game 3, he played 36 minutes and scored 30 points on 18 shot attempts
Who Benefits Without Steph Curry?
Jonathan Kuminga has shown that he can be productive when given extended minutes without Curry. He logged at least 30 minutes in a game six times during the regular season. During the regular season, Kuminga averaged 14.4 points per game and shot 44.2% from the field on the road. At home, he averaged 16.1 points and shot 46.4% from the field.
Kuminga leads all Warriors in usage rate without Curry on the floor since March (post-trade deadline) at 27.5%, while Butler is close behind, at 26.5% usage.
Here are Kuminga’s stat projections tonight for Game 4, via the PrizePicks NBA board.
