Portugal vs. Spain Prediction, Spread, Over/Under – Monday, July 6

How to Watch Portugal vs. Spain: FOX (English) / Telemundo (Spanish)

Kickoff Time: 3 p.m. ET

Venue: AT&T Stadium (Dallas Stadium), Dallas, TX, USA

Spain’s defense has been on another level in this tournament. It starts with a front line and midfield that pressure at an elite rate of 8.1 PPDA, as well as a back line that operates with the furthest starting point from goal (48.1 meters).

Only Canada has forced more high turnovers than Spain's 43, which allows them to quickly win the ball back and dominate possession. When they fail, they’ve limited the damage. Their 19 shots against and 3 shots on target allowed both pace all nations.

Add in the 0.04 xG allowed per shot and ceding just 42.11% of those shots inside the box, and you have an elite unit that anchors everything Spain does.

Offensively, the midfield of Rodri, Pedri, and Dani Olmo runs things. It’s their job to distribute the ball out wide to RW Lamine Yamal and to find ST Mikel Oyarzabal in the penalty area. Additionally, they get plenty of attacking contributions from RB Pedro Porro and LB Marc Cucurella, with the latter assisting twice in their 3-0 win over Austria last time out.

Portugal plays in a similar fashion, ranking seventh in PPDA (10.1) and fifth in possession (61.8%). However, ST Cristiano Ronaldo’s lack of pressure stunts their ability to turn that into results, as they’ve forced just 22 high turnovers.

While Portugal’s midfield trio of Bruno Fernandes, João Neves, and Vitinha rival Spain’s in terms of individual talent, they’ve yet to properly click. In fact, the removal of Fernandes and Vitinha led to a better stretch of play against Croatia — although the removal of Ronaldo may also have played a role in that.

Ronaldo’s desire to drop back into midfield to get touches has stunted a bit of Portugal’s threat, but this is a matchup where he should be able to operate in more space. The question is whether he can do anything with that, given he’s yet to win a single take-on with a defender.

Roberto Martínez will have some serious decisions to make. Portugal has been fortunate to concede less than half the goals expected so far, but Spain’s finishing ability could test that. He also will have to decide how long he gives Ronaldo to make an impact, with Gonçalo Ramos averaging a goal contribution every 37 minutes for the national team.

Portugal may be thanking its lucky stars it defeated Croatia, who had a seemingly good goal controversially ruled out late in stoppage time. They must defend better against Spain, or Ronaldo’s international career could end with the final whistle.

  • He's attempted at least 19 passes in all four of Portugal’s matches, averaging 22.25 per outing.
  • Spain dominates possession at a 68.2% clip, the most of any nation at the tournament. They also allow the fewest penalty area touches at just 7.5 per match.
  • Ronaldo has a strong tendency to drop into midfield to get on the ball if he goes more than a few minutes without a touch. Add in his inability to beat anybody off the dribble, and there’s a strong correlation with a higher passing output should he continue that tendency.
