Mexico vs. South Korea Group A Preview for World Cup Today

Both sides enter Thursday's match knowing a win would clinch Group A. Mexico and South Korea each picked up three points on Matchday 1 and would secure the top spot with another victory tonight.

Mexico entered as the Group A favorite and showed exactly why in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. El Tri dominated South Africa on both sides of the ball and finished with a comfortable 2-0 victory last week. Javier Aguirre's defense was outstanding, limiting South Africa to just 3 total shots and 39% possession.

South Korea will be a far tougher test for the co-hosts. Their comeback win over Czechia last week proved they are a genuine force in this group and could potentially clinch it later tonight.

Myung Bo Hong's side controlled large spells of the match but didn't find the net until late in the second half. They created 4 big chances and had an xG of 1.53 in the final 45 minutes of the game last week. A win tonight would mark South Korea’s first time topping a group at the World Cup since 2002.

How Mexico Can Win vs. South Korea

Mexico to Win Payout via PrizePicks: 1.96x ($100 pays $196)

Mexico Best Players to Watch: FW Julián Quiñones, CB Johan Vásquez, ST Raúl Jiménez

Mexico can gain the upper hand by using its wide players to attack South Korea's defense, win set pieces, and deliver balls into the box to exploit the Asian side's tendency to defend deep. Czechia caused South Korea problems from almost every set piece last week, and Mexico has the quality to do the same.

Expect Mexico to press aggressively and look to win the ball high up the pitch, either to strike quickly on the counter or force the fouls that lead to dangerous set pieces.

How South Korea Can Win vs. Mexico

South Korea to Win Payout via PrizePicks: 3.7x ($100 pays $370)

South Korea Best Players to Watch: CAM Kang-in Lee, FW Hyeon-gyu Oh, FW Son Heung-min

South Korea will look to build on its second-half showing against Czechia when they face the co-hosts tonight. They created chances at will through quick passing and sharp decision-making in the final third. South Korea will also benefit from the absence of Mexico CB César Montes, who is suspended after picking up a red card in Mexico's opener.

Bo Hong’s squad will use its wingers, both excellent playmakers, to create chances through well-timed runs and overlapping movement in possession. Expect South Korea to look to hit Mexico on the break while likely ceding more possession than they did against Czechia.

Kang-in Lee was arguably South Korea’s most consistent attacking threat in the opening match of the tournament last week. The PSG star created 1 big chance with 3 key passes and a critical assist to help mount the comeback over Czechia.
