What Canada vs. Qatar Starting Lineups Mean for World Cup Predictions
Canada will go with a very similar lineup to their last matchup, again in a 4-4-2 shape. However, there are two main changes: Cyle Larin starts up top alongside Jonathan David, while Ali Ahmed will start on the left side of the midfield.
Larin came off the bench in the 76th minute against Bosnia, scored three minutes later, giving the Canadian attack a much-needed spark. He should help Canada press early and often in this game vs. Qatar’s low-block defense.
Larin also could help Canada with finishing — something they struggled with vs. Bosnia, and the Swiss could do only once on 26 shots vs. Qatar in Matchday 1.
As for star left wing-back Alphonso Davies, he is not yet fit to start, but he is available off the bench. That does put a dent in Canada’s perceived cross-first strategy, but vs. a much lower-rated Qatar side, it likely won’t change the approach.
Canada generated 1.49 xG, attempted 30 crosses, but completed only 2 in their first World Cup match. David had 3 cross attempts and didn't connect on any.
Canada’s cross-heavy approach could be the plan again today against a Qatar side that will sit even deeper than Bosnia did. Qatar spent 47% of their out-of-possession time in a low block against Switzerland and pressed at virtually zero high rate.
Qatar keeper Mahmoud Abunada was the star of their first match, with 74 goalkeeper involvements vs. Switzerland, posting an 83% save rate on 26 attempts. He was the only reason Qatar came away with a point vs. Switzerland, which now sits at the top of the group.
Canada is going to generate that kind of volume again — possibly even more, given home crowd and Larin set to start.
The main attacker to watch for Qatar — if any — if Akram Afif. He completed 10-of-14 line break attempts against Switzerland and is their only attacker capable of creating something from nothing. which may be what Qatar needs today.
For PrizePicks, the players that could be worth targeting based on today's confirmed XIs: Larin with a full 90 and the forward role he's earned; Abunada walking into an arguably worse situation than he handled vs. Switzerland, and Afif as Qatar's only realistic path to attacking in this match.
