The Mexican national team enters the 2026 World Cup off a strong four-year run following their group-stage exit in 2022.

Javier Aguirre was appointed manager following Mexico's elimination from the 2024 Copa America. Now in his third stint with the national team, Aguirre has won three major trophies, including the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup last year.

Mexico enters as one of three host nations and will look to use home-field advantage in a competitive Group A. El Tri is currently favored to win Group A on PrizePicks Team Picks, returning a 1.78x payout (live as of writing and subject to change) if they claim first place.

Over on PrizePicks Team Picks, you can make a prediction on how certain countries will perform in the 2026 World Cup and earn a real-money payout if you’re correct. For example, a $100 entry on a specific country to win the World Cup at an 8.5x payout would return $850.

Below, we’ll discuss a projection of Mexico’s World Cup roster and potential options for its starting XI, as well as some top players at each position.

Mexico World Cup Roster Prediction

Let's dive into the full roster projection for Mexico at the World Cup this summer.

Goalkeepers for 2026 World Cup

  • Raul Rangel
  • Guillermo Ochoa
  • Carlos Acevedo

Aguirre will be without first-choice goalkeeper Luis Malagon, who tore his Achilles tendon in a CONCACAF Champions Cup match in March. El Vasco may turn to Raul Rangel, the 26-year-old who has started every match since Malagon's injury.

Mexican legend Guillermo Ochoa is expected to earn his sixth World Cup roster spot, joining Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to appear on six World Cup rosters.

The 40-year-old was Mexico's starter in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 tournaments but might be an emergency option this time around.

Carlos Acevedo is the final goalkeeper to watch for Mexico's 2026 World Cup roster. The 30-year-old keeper has made just six appearances for his country before this tournament.

Defenders for 2026 World Cup

Right Back(s)

  • Israel Reyes
  • Jorge Sanchez

Center Backs

  • Cesar Montes
  • Johan Vasquez
  • Luis Romo
  • Alejandro Gomez

Left Back(s)

  • Jesus Gallardo
  • Mateo Chavez

Mexico's defense has improved significantly over the last four years, and Aguirre may depend greatly on Cesar Montes and Co. to continue their stellar play into the World Cup.

Montes left Lokomotiv Moscow's final match early with an injury but has since returned to training and is expected to be ready for the World Cup.

Aguirre is tracking to stick with the same back four from the Gold Cup Final, with the right-back spot being the most up for grabs. Jorge Sanchez started the Gold Cup Final but was subbed off for Israel Reyes towards the end.

Left back Jesus Gallardo is set for his third World Cup, having started every match for Mexico in the tournament since 2018. Gallardo, Montes, and Sanchez all started in 2022, while Johan Vasquez was selected to the roster but never played in that tournament.

Vasquez has stepped into the other starting center-back role following the retirement of Hector Moreno. The 27-year-old defender started alongside Montes in the Gold Cup Final.

Midfielders for 2026 World Cup

  • Gilberto Mora
  • Edson Alvarez
  • Brian Gutierrez
  • Alvaro Fidalgo
  • Luis Chavez
  • Erik Lira
  • Obed Vargas

Mexico's midfield is undergoing a strong youth movement, headlined by 17-year-old Gilberto Mora. Mora could soon become El Tri's youngest-ever World Cup player.

Mora started alongside Mexico’s captain Edson Alvarez in Mexico’s Gold Cup Final. Alvarez will appear in his third World Cup after making his senior debut at just 20 years old in 2017.

The defensive midfielder spent the season on loan at Fenerbahçe, making just 17 appearances.

Alvarez and Mora figure to be alongside 22-year-old budding star Brian Gutierrez. Gutierrez switched his international allegiance from the US to Mexico and has impressed in Liga MX since leaving the Chicago Fire.

The attacking midfielder has started Mexico's last four friendlies, scoring twice in that stretch.

Aguirre could also include 20-year-old Obed Vargas, one of Mexico’s top prospects, in the final World Cup squad. Vargas made 12 appearances for Atletico Madrid and is regarded as one of the best young defensive midfielders in Europe.

With Alvarez ahead of him in the pecking order, Vargas may see limited minutes this summer.

Forwards for 2026 World Cup

  • Raul Jimenez
  • Julian Quinones
  • Roberto Alvarado
  • Alexis Vega
  • Orbelin Pineda
  • Santiago Gimenez
  • Armando Gonzalez
  • Guillermo Martinez

Many anticipate Mexico to bring eight forward options to the 2026 World Cup, starring striker Raul Jimenez. This would be his fourth World Cup roster since making his international debut in 2013.

The 35-year-old sits third on Mexico's all-time scoring list with 44 goals in 125 appearances, though he is still searching for his first World Cup goal in five appearances.

Jimenez started the Gold Cup Final alongside Alexis Vega and Roberto Alvarado, but wingers Julian Quinones and Orbelin Pineda have also made Aguirre’s starting XI in recent matches.

It's uncertain who we'll see up top once the tournament begins, but Jimenez could be the favorite to start.

Quinones had the strongest club season among Mexican forwards, posting 41 goal contributions in 35 matches for Saudi side Al-Qadsiah.

The 29-year-old is set for his first World Cup after switching his allegiance from Colombia to Mexico in 2023. He's since earned 20 caps for El Tri, scoring twice.

Aguirre will have decisions to make for Jimenez’s backup, with Santiago Gimenez perhaps being a rotation player in the 2026 World Cup.

The AC Milan striker endured a difficult season, managing just 6 goal contributions across 30 combined appearances for club and country.

23-year-old Armando Gonzalez arrives at his first World Cup in strong form and could earn more minutes than Gimenez.

Gonzalez has drawn praise from Mexico's all-time leading scorer, Chicharito, and former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué ahead of the tournament.
