What France vs. England Starting Lineups Mean for World Cup Third-Place Game Predictions

Contrary to some World Cup Third-Place matches of the past, this one has a multitude of storylines coming into it despite neither team competing for true Cup supremacy.

On France’s side, it’s the last ride for manager Didier Deschamps as he soon makes way for Zinédine Zidane. He has ample reason to let his guys chase a win against England — particularly Mbappé, who continues his quest for the Golden Boot award on Saturday.

Can Les Bleus deliver one last triumph for Deschamps after suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of Spain in the semifinals?

For England, a Third-Place match victory would snap a 60-year drought of not snagging a World Cup trophy. A 1966 tournament win over West Germany was ages ago. Additionally, manager Thomas Tuchel has been under fire for his late-match decisions in the club’s World Cup semis loss to Argentina.

Tuchel opted for more of a defense-oriented approach down the stretch, and it cost both him and his players greatly.

Deschamps was widely expected to rotate in some squad players on Saturday. Tuchel doesn’t regret failing to prioritize depth last time out for the Three Lions, and the public criticism he’s facing is likely far worse than the sentiment around the club.

Saturday’s France vs. England lineups reflect the former side seeming more desperate for a send-off victory in the World Cup. Many starters are already swapped out for others in greater volume than usual, but there remain some marquee names to consider.

The lineup's absence of CB William Saliba due to a back injury is among the most noteworthy omissions for France. RW Ousmane Dembélé is also in those listed as substitutions for the French side.

Not to be outdone by Mbappé too much thus far, both CAM Jude Bellingham and ST Harry Kane have 6 goals apiece for England. With them set as reserves, however, it remains to be seen whether they'll be involved. MF Kobbie Mainoo is out with an injury.

Another standout call from Tuchel is rolling with Dean Henderson in goal instead of Jordan Pickford. Versatile chess piece Reece James and F Bukayo Saka both battled questions about fitness as the weekend arrived, but Saka is good to start.
