The Lynx bounced back from a two-game slide to win their last two games. WNBA leading scorer Napheesa Collier returned to the lineup following a seven-game absence with an ankle injury in Sunday’s victory over Indiana.
Seattle wraps up a five-game road trip that the Storm has started 3-1. Following victories over Chicago, Dallas, and Washington, the Storm were blown out at Indiana on Tuesday, 95-76.
Seattle Storm
Seattle dropped six consecutive games to begin August, but has come back to life to go 4-2 in the past six contests and are now firmly in the playoff discussion.
In three matchups with the Lynx this season, the Storm has managed only one win. Granted, Seattle beat the team with the best record on June 11, but the Storm fell short in a 4-point home loss to the Lynx on August 5.
Minnesota Lynx
Life is good for the Lynx, who welcomed back Collier in Sunday’s home victory over the Fever. Minnesota never surpassed the 95-point threshold during her seven-game absence, but put up 97 points in a rematch of the July 1 Commissioner’s Cup.
Although Las Vegas has caught fire with 12 consecutive victories, the Lynx hold a 5.5-game edge over the Aces for the top overall playoff spot in the league.
Storm vs. Lynx Picks – Thursday, August 28
Below are several player projections to keep an eye on for tonight’s battle between Seattle and Minnesota.
Lynx F Napheesa Collier vs. Storm: 22.5 Points
Collier is averaging 23.9 points per game to lead the WNBA as she showed no ill-effects of her ankle injury in her return. The former UConn standout scored 32 points on 11-of-16 shooting in Sunday’s victory over the Fever.
In three of her past four games, Collier has topped the 30-point mark. She compiled 23 or more points in six of the last nine games, including three straight at home.
Against Seattle this season, Collier struggled from the floor. In her first matchup at home on May 22, she posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, but was limited to 7-of-18 shooting from the field.
In the second matchup in Seattle two weeks later, Collier put up 25 points, but managed only 9 field goal attempts. In the two games, Collier shot 1-of-7 from 3-point range as she missed the third meeting due to her ankle injury.
Storm F Nneka Ogwumike vs. Lynx: 17 Points
The top selection of the 2012 draft isn’t slowing down, averaging 18.3 points per game in her second season with the Storm. During her first 12 seasons in Los Angeles, Ogwumike owned a higher scoring average three times than what she is currently posting at 35-years-old.
Ogwumike finished with 17 points in Tuesday’s blowout loss to the Fever, although she shot 7-of-11 from the field.
Since the All-Star break, the scoring numbers have been inconsistent for Ogwumike. The former Stanford star has eight performances of 21 points or more, but has been limited to 12 points or fewer in three games.
Ogwumike’s worst showing against Minnesota came in the first matchup, as she managed just 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting. But she played better in the last two meetings with the Lynx, posting 21 points in the home victory and 23 points in the most recent matchup in early August.
Storm G Skylar Diggins vs. Lynx: 19.5 Pts+Asts
Diggins dominated the Sky in the opener of this road trip with 24 points in a 94-88 triumph at Chicago. However, the veteran guard has dropped off in the scoring department, putting up a total of 22 points in the past three games.
Since the start of August, Diggins has finished with more than 20 points + assists in seven of 12 games. Although her scoring dipped in the last few contests, the former Notre Dame standout dished out a total of 19 assists against the Mystics and Fever.
Diggins has eclipsed this projection in two of three matchups with Minnesota this season. She scored 18 points and posted 3 assists in the first meeting, followed by an 18-point, 6-assist showing in the home victory.
On the road, Diggins has been more effective from 3-point range, knocking down 42.2% of her attempts compared to 30.5% at home.
